How to Measure Your Product for the Perfect Box Size

Illustrative photo: a box being measured with a tape measure and ruler, with length, width and height arrows

Why does the right box size matter?

The size of a custom box affects almost everything about it. A box that is too tight can crush corners or make the product hard to remove. A box that is too loose lets the product move around in transit and looks unfinished when the customer opens it. Size also changes how much material goes into the box, which is one of the factors that affects price.

Getting the measurements right before you request a quote saves revisions later and helps your digital proof match what you expect.

What do box dimensions L × W × H mean?

Packaging dimensions are almost always written in the same order: length, then width, then height. The measurements describe the opening of the box first and the depth last.

Reading box dimensions
LetterMeaningWhere to measure
LLengthLonger side of the opening
WWidthShorter side of the opening
HHeight (depth)From the opening to the bottom

So a box written as 8 × 6 × 3 in has an opening of 8 by 6 inches and is 3 inches deep. Swapping the order changes the box: 8 × 3 × 6 in would open on a narrow side and be twice as deep.

Should I give inside or outside dimensions?

Give inside dimensions. Inside dimensions decide whether the product fits. Outside dimensions are larger because they include the thickness of the board, and the difference grows with thicker materials such as corrugated or rigid board.

If you also have a limit on outside size, such as a shelf slot or shipping limit, mention it in your quote request alongside the inside size.

How do I measure my product correctly?

  1. Place the product the way it will sit in the box (upright, flat or on its side).
  2. Use a rigid ruler or caliper rather than a soft tape where you can.
  3. Measure the widest point on each side, including caps, pumps, handles, hang tags or anything that sticks out.
  4. Add space for inserts, tissue, bubble wrap or a leaflet.
  5. Write the result as inside L × W × H with units (inches or millimeters).
  6. Measure two or three units of the same product in case sizes vary slightly.

How do I measure different product shapes?

How do I measure bottles, jars and tubes?

Measure the diameter at the widest point (often the shoulder or the cap) and the total height including the cap, pump or dropper. A round product in a square box uses the diameter for both length and width.

How do I measure irregular products?

Imagine the smallest rectangle the product would fit into, then measure that rectangle. Photos with a ruler beside the product help the packaging team understand the shape.

How do I measure kits and multi-item boxes?

Arrange the items the way you want them presented, measure the whole layout, and list every component with its own size. If the items need to stay in place, mention that you need an insert.

How much extra space should I add?

There is no single rule, because it depends on the product and the packing method. As a guide:

  • Snug-fit retail cartons: leave only enough room for the product to slide in and out.
  • Products packed with tissue or wrap: add the thickness of the wrapping on every side.
  • Fragile products: allow room for a protective insert and say so in your request.
  • Products with inserts: give the product size and let the team size the insert and box together.

If you are unsure, send the bare product dimensions and describe how it will be packed. Every box we make is made to your exact size, so it is easier to get the size right on the quote than after production.

How do I choose the right box size for shipping?

Boxes that ship directly to customers usually need a little more protection than retail cartons. A close fit with an insert stops movement, and a smaller overall box generally uses less material and space. Mailer boxes are a common choice for direct shipping.

Board thickness matters too. Our mailer boxes are primarily single-wall corrugated, commonly E-flute for small/medium and B-flute for larger/heavier mailers, which is one reason outside dimensions differ from inside dimensions.

Is there a size limit for custom boxes?

Not with us. Every box is made to your exact size, with no size limit and no standard sizes to fit into. That means you never have to pick the nearest stock size and fill the gap with packing material. Our minimum order is 50 units for every box style (small runs of 50–249 units are quoted individually), so even a small run gets a box sized to the product.

What common measuring mistakes should I avoid?

  • Mixing up the order of length, width and height.
  • Sending outside dimensions when inside dimensions are needed.
  • Leaving out caps, pumps or handles.
  • Forgetting the space taken by inserts or wrapping.
  • Leaving out units, or mixing inches and millimeters.

After you request a quote, you review a digital proof where technically supported. Digital previews help you review your packaging configuration before finalizing your order. Final production appearance may vary based on materials, printing and finishing.

How do box style and material change the size I need?

The same product can need slightly different box sizes depending on the style. Thicker board takes up more space, inserts add layers inside the box, and some closures need extra room to tuck or lock. That is why it is best to give the product's real size and how it will be packed, rather than trying to calculate the final box size yourself.

How style affects sizing
Box styleSizing consideration
Folding cartonThin board; a snug fit is common for retail
Mailer boxCorrugated board adds thickness; allow room for wrap or an insert
Rigid boxThick board and often an insert; outside size grows noticeably
Shipping boxAllow room for protective packing material

Frequently asked questions

What order are box dimensions written in?
Length × width × height (L × W × H). Length and width describe the opening and height is the depth.
Should I give inside or outside dimensions?
Inside dimensions, because they decide whether the product fits. Outside dimensions include the board thickness.
How do I measure a bottle for a box?
Measure the diameter at its widest point and the total height including the cap or pump, then add any room needed for an insert.
Does box size affect the price?
Yes. Price depends on dimensions, material, structure, printing, number of colors, finishes, inserts, quantity, production and shipping requirements.
Do you have standard box sizes?
No. Every box is made to your exact size, with no size limit and no standard sizes. Send your inside L × W × H with your quote request.
What if I am not sure of the size?
Send your product dimensions, photos and how it will be packed with your quote request, and the box size is confirmed on your quote.
