Wine Gift Packaging: Folding Cartons vs Rigid Boxes

When is a folding carton the right wine gift box?

Custom wine boxes start with the bottle. A standard bottle, a wider sparkling bottle, and a squat spirits-style bottle do not share a dieline. A folding carton is the right gift when you want a printed box that ships flat, folds around one bottle, and can include a simple insert so the glass does not hit the wall. It is also the right choice when the bottle is the product and the carton is the protector plus the brand panel.

This guide does not list prices. A folding carton may show a starting price on the product page when one is published. Do not copy any figure into the artwork or into an ad from this article. If you need a number, read the product page or the quote you receive.

When should the gift be a rigid or magnetic box?

A rigid box or a magnetic-closure box is a set-up gift. It suits a presentation where the lid comes off in front of someone, a paired glass and bottle, or a corporate gift that should feel heavy in the hand. Those builds stay quote-only. There is no public price table for them, and this article will not invent one. Ask for the rigid or magnetic structure in the quote and keep the folding carton as a separate line if you sell both.

The comparison in rigid, magnetic or folding is the style guide. Wine adds the bottle diameter, the punt, and whether you are packing one bottle or two. Custom gift boxes is the category if the same program also includes non-bottle gifts.

How do you size a box to a bottle?

Measure the bottle height to the top of the capsule, the diameter at the widest point of the base, and the diameter of the shoulder if it is wider than you expect. Sparkling bottles and some spirits bottles need more width than a straight still-wine bottle. A two-bottle carton needs a divider or two cells, not one wide cavity, or the bottles knock together.

  • One still-wine bottle: height, base diameter, and whether a capsule or wax seal adds height.
  • Sparkling: expect a wider base and a longer cork cage. Measure that bottle, do not reuse the still-wine dieline.
  • Bottle plus accessory: measure the accessory too, and say if it sits beside the bottle or in a lid.
  • Shipping: say if this carton is the shipper or if it goes inside another mailer.

An insert or a folding divider is part of the quote, not an afterthought. Glass that can move will arrive chipped. Say “insert for one bottle” in the brief so it is drawn with the carton.

What should the printed gift say?

The panel needs the brand, the wine name if you print it, and any gift line you can support. Leave vintage, origin, and alcohol statements to the label and to your own compliance review. This article does not supply legal wine copy. Do not print awards, scores, approval seals, or standards-body marks.

Finish choices that suit a gift carton are matte or soft-touch lamination, a gloss lamination when you want the panel to shine, aqueous coating, varnish, a foil logo, spot UV on the name, and embossing on a heavier board. Offset, digital, and screen printing are all available. Optional Pantone or PMS colours keep a crest or a capsule colour consistent. Digital fits a vintage or a club release that changes. Offset fits a house gift carton that stays the same.

How do folding and rigid change the order, not the bottle?

The bottle does not change. The order does. A folding carton ships flat to you and is packed when you are ready to gift or ship. A rigid or magnetic box arrives as a set-up box and needs storage space before the bottles go in. If your back room is small, that difference matters more than the photo of an open lid. Say which one you want so the quote is not a blend of both.

Quantity is the same commercial rule either way: minimum 50 units, runs of 50–249 quoted individually. Production takes 7–14 business days after the proof is approved. A holiday ship date has to include that production window and the transit time. The proof check is the bottle height, the base fit, and the spelling of the cuvée.

How should a shipped bottle differ from a bottle you hand over?

A bottle you hand to someone can use a folding carton that looks right when it is opened in person, or a rigid box when the presentation is the gift. A bottle that travels needs the glass held still and an outer pack that can take a knock. Say which journey this order is for. A beautiful folding carton that is also the shipper is a stronger brief than a thin gift sleeve with no plan for the carrier.

For a handed gift, the open moment matters. A magnetic or rigid lid is quote-only and is built for that moment. A folding tuck that the guest opens is a simpler version of the same idea. Do not describe both in one sentence and expect one price. Ask for the structure you will actually pack.

For shipping, name the insert, the orientation of the bottle, and whether two bottles share a carton. Horizontal bottle pack and vertical bottle pack are different dielines. A punt and a capsule change the inside length. Measure the bottle you ship, including any wax or a loose capsule edge. This article still does not list a price for either journey.

What should the insert do, and what should you tell the quote?

The insert holds the glass off the walls and off a second bottle. It can be a folding board cell, a pulp fit, or a divider. Say which you want, or ask the quote to propose one and then approve it on the proof. A divider that is shorter than the bottle’s contact point will let the shoulders knock. Describe the contact: base, shoulder, or both.

If a glass, a stopper, or a card sits in the same box, give it a place. A card slipped beside the bottle needs width. A stopper in the lid needs depth in that lid, which is a rigid-box question and therefore quote-only. Do not add those pieces after the dieline is approved and expect the bottle still to fit.

On the proof, check the bottle outline against a bottle you have in the room. Slide a paper mock around the glass if you can. The spelling of the wine name matters, and so does the millimeter of clearance at the base. Production takes 7–14 business days after that approval. A holiday date that ignores the insert redraw will miss the holiday. If the gift is a pair, confirm the divider is tall enough at the shoulders and that the two labels face the way you will hand the box over. A pair is not two single cartons glued together. It is its own inside width, and it stays quote-only when the structure is rigid or magnetic. The folding version of that pair is still a different line from the single-bottle carton. Ask for the one you will pack.

What do you include in the wine packaging quote?

  1. Bottle type: still, sparkling, or a wider bottle, with measurements.
  2. Structure: folding carton, or rigid or magnetic and therefore quote-only.
  3. One bottle or two, and whether an insert is required.
  4. Print and one finish, not a list of every effect.
  5. Quantity and the date you need them after the 7–14 business day production window.

Request a quote — minimum 50 units, runs of 50–249 quoted individually, 7–14 business days. Do not put a price in the request. Ask for the structure, and let the quote return the figure.

Frequently asked questions

Does this guide include wine box prices?
No. Folding cartons may show a starting price on the product page. Rigid and magnetic boxes are quote-only. This article lists neither.
Can one dieline fit still and sparkling bottles?
No. Measure the bottle you are packing. Sparkling bottles are wider and the closure is taller.
What is the minimum order?
Minimum 50 units, runs of 50–249 quoted individually. Production takes 7–14 business days after approval.
Can the carton carry an approval seal?
No. Do not print an approval seal or a standards-body mark, and do not invent awards or scores.
Should a corporate gift be rigid?
When the presentation is a set-up box, yes, and that build is quote-only. A folding carton is the right gift when you need a shippable printed box.
